Pack your tent because we’re pitching up for some campfire cooking.
On the beach, in the woods or even in your back garden, why not try some campfire cooking this summer holiday?
Campfire Cooking Safety Tips
- Collecting firewood is great fun but get an adult to build the fire – keep hands and feet away from the heat.
- Don’t play around the fire and sit at a good distance when cooking.
- Collect a bucket of water to sit next to fire for hot utensils.
- When you are done with campfire cooking, make sure the fire is totally out. Sprinkle water on the fire and stir the ashes around with a stick.
Pick a stick!
Go on the hunt for a long stick perfect for toasting marshmallows and avoid burnt fingers – it must be strong and clean for you to spike your gooey treats on the end.
Make sweet burritos with your favourite fillings
Take a soft wheat flour tortilla, then fill and wrap it up with your favourite fillings. Roll it up tightly in a big piece of foil, then get an adult to toast it over the fire for a few minutes.
WARNING…your burrito will be hot and bubbling – let them cool a little before tucking. Melted jam and marshmallows are particular hot culprits.
Filling ideas…
-
- A tablespoon or two of your favourite jam, smeared all over the tortilla.
-
- Add peanut butter to your jam for double the fun.
-
- Chocolate chips, either on their own or spread with a base layer of jam – raspberry jam is perfect with dark chocolate and strawberry with white chocolate.
-
- Chopped up tinned fruit, such as peaches, pears or apricots, with a generous layer of chocolate spread over the tortilla before you scatter the fruit to help it all stick together.
- Mini marshmallows will melt into a sweet sticky heaven in moments.
