Spring Sowing with Harvest Workers’ Co-op, Okehampton  

This spring sees a new program of food and farming events in and around Okehampton, Devon. Organised by Harvest Workers’ Co-op, the town’s very own social enterprise and co-operative.

The seven members started trading as a co-operative in July last year through their organic, locally sourced and educational farm shop, alongside delivering interactive, food-based events to the local community. Their aim is to help the locals to engage in the social, environmental and health issues surrounding food and farming, and to continue increasing their impact and offering.  

As a time for renewal and fresh perspective, spring sees growers sowing their first seeds and dairy farmers meeting their new calves; hoping for a fruitful season to come. Harvest Workers’ Co-op offers up the invitation for local people to visit local farms, aiming to connect people to the food they buy and to demonstrate the realities of natural farming methods. Coming up, the team have arranged a visit to Down Farm, who supply organic produce to the shop and are members of the co-operative. This visit will be taking place on Sunday 13 May in Winkleigh, and on Sunday 19 May the co-operative have organised a visit to the shop’s dairy producers, Taw River Dairy.
