Choosing the right wines for your Christmas party can be a minefield. Luckily, we have Mark Banham of wine merchants Morrish & Banham on Dorchester’s Brewery Square on hand with his top tips…
Your Christmas party could be the most important event of your festive period. But have no fear, follow these top tips and ensure a relaxing, delicious occasion for all!
Know your guests! – Think about who is coming to your party and how many. A genteel gathering for a well-chosen half dozen of your best friends might allow you to splash out on something equally fine. The Classic Reserve 2010 from Furleigh Estate, Bridport, West Dorset (£26.99) is a sumptuous blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. You will only need a bottle or two so you can push the boat out!
For a house full of thirsty friends you might need quite a quantity! A great value fizz, such as Casa Defra Prosecco Frizzante (£8.99) from the Veneto, Italy will fill the bill but not break the bank.
Canapé catastrophe! – Many food and wine pairings are made in heaven, but others are less successful. Perhaps choose your wine first and think which canapés will support it. Alain Dezat’s Sancerre (£15.99) from the Loire, France is made to accompany goat’s cheese, smoked fish, and more. If you like it spicy, be careful in your choice of wine. Chilli heat needs to be absorbed into a soft & generous wine: think spicy Kimchi Pork canapes with a soft succulent Nativa Carmenere (£9.99) from Chile.
Relax & enjoy! – Remember that the more someone knows about wine, the more they will appreciate a wine which is honest, well made and good value! Use your local wine merchant for advice and they will help you find the right wine for your party.
