Summer Foodie Breaks: Lyme Regis in Dorset

If you’re planning a mini tour of some of the West Country’s best foodie spots this summer, take a look at Lyme Regis.


For Eating!
The hard part is deciding where to go. You are so spoilt for choice in this part of the world. Of course your guesthouse is just a short walk from the Hix Oyster and Fish House where you can enjoy freshly caught fish dishes and take in the panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast. If you’re looking for a quick lunch fix pop into the Whole Hog where you can pick up rolls jammed full of pork and chicken, described by many as perfection in a bun. There’s the vegetarian restaurant Tierra Kitchen with local, seasonal and organic produce packed with flavour, tempting even the most determined meat lovers.

Planning your days out!
Take a short drive to the beautiful Burton Bradstock Beach, walk the cliffs and take lunch at the Hive Beach Cafe. Its fame has spread far and wide so you have to arrive early to claim your spot under the awnings right on the beach. The menu boasts anything from a crab sandwich to a seafood platter fit for a king and a dazzling array of home made cakes.

If you can’t get in there head for The Stable at the Bull Hotel in Bridport where there are mouthwatering pizzas, gourmet pies and a range of West Country ciders on offer.

Just ten minutes away Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage is a shrine to all things culinary. With seasonal events, cookery courses and bespoke days out; try your hand at anything from bread-making and meat curing to learning the art of foraging. Or you can head into Axminster to sample the River Cottage Canteen.

Pick up a dazzling array of artisan breads at Town Mill Bakery. They’re made the old-fashioned way with ingredients your great-grandmother would know well. You can eat in too and everything is done on trust. Just tell them what you ate on the way out and hand over the cash. Roly’s Fudge shop should be on your to do list. You can pick up treats like sea salt or vanilla clotted cream and butterscotch fudge.

Where to stay!
Treat yourself to a break at Hix Townhouse and stay in one of the eight bedrooms designed by top chef Mark Hix himself. Eat like a king every morning with a fabulous breakfast hamper delivered to your door. It includes sweet and savoury tarts, fruits and cereals along with Mark’s own smoked salmon.
