Lagan Farm Shop at Orchard Park is well placed to pick from the tastiest cheeses in the West Country; being located right on the border between Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire with plenty of local producers only a few miles from the Farm Shop! Here are a few of their favourites:
- Wookey Hole Cave Aged Farmhouse Cheddar from Ashley Chase Estate near Abbotsbury, Dorset. This cheese is aged in the caves at Wookey Hole for 11-18 months which gives it a distinctive earthy nutty taste. It’s the constant year-round temperature of 11C and humidity that produce this award winning Cheddar.
- Dorset Blue Vinney, produced just down the road near Sturminster Newton, Dorset by the Davies family with milk from their own herd of Friesian cows. This is a delicious cheese that has a crumbly, creamy texture and veining throughout made to a very old recipe revived in the 1980’s by Mike Davies. The word ‘Vinney’ is derived from an old English term for mould – ‘Vinew’ – which was used in the 17th century.
- Westcombe Cheddar is another firm favourite, produced in Evercreech, Somerset. This traditional clothbound cheddar is again aged for 11-18 months, resulting in a deep complex flavour. This distinctive cheese has been awarded the ‘Artisan Somerset Cheddar’ designation status from Slow Food.
