Box schemes have become very popular in the last few years, but not all vegetable boxes are created equal! The Community Farm, just outside Bristol, have been named Britain’s Best Organic Box Scheme in the Soil Association’s BOOM Awards because unlike some other box schemes, they are committed to 100% organic produce, supplied in the most ethical, sustainable and environmentally friendly way possible. They also involve people from their local community in growing and learning about the food they eat.
Having a dedicated team on a small acreage means they can use less mechanisation and a more hands-on process. This allows them to manage their soil responsibly, provide well-tended crops and keep the land in good condition for generations to come.
Everything The Community Farm grow is organic and grown in a way that supports nature. Not only does organic farming produce very tasty fruit and vegetables, it also provides a rich habitat for wildlife to thrive in. The team have even spotted a few endangered species on the farm, such as the Violet Oil Beetle and hedgehogs.
The Community Farm are a not-for-profit organisation and invest all their profits into learning experiences for children, adults and vulnerable people. Throughout the year they provide lots of opportunities to join them on the farm. You can volunteer alongside their field staff; go to workshops or events, and learn about organic agriculture.
Through their work with schools they have helped children to learn about organic farming and sustainable food production. They think it is important that children truly appreciate how and where their food is grown and develop a connection with the land. By experiencing the journey of food from field to fork they encourage healthier eating and more sustainable shopping habits later in life.
The Community Farm is a welcoming space for people from all walks of life to learn new skills, get fresh air and exercise, and lead more fulfilled, less isolated lives. All sorts of people visit them on a daily basis to learn and enjoy the farm’s beautiful environment. So go on, get on their land!
